The Mets mourn the loss of Ed Kranepool, a beloved player and coach who was a key member of the 1969 Miracle Mets. He was 79.

Kranepool, a first baseman and outfielder, played for the Mets from 1962 to 1979 and was a fan favorite. He was a key member of the 1969 team that won the World Series, and he also played in the 1973 World Series.

After his playing career, Kranepool coached for the Mets and other teams. He was inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame in 1987.

"Ed Kranepool was a true Met," said Mets COO Jeff Wilpon. "He was a great player and a great person. He will be deeply missed."

Kranepool was born in the Bronx and attended James Monroe High School. He was signed by the Mets as an amateur free agent in 1961.

Kranepool made his major league debut in 1962 and quickly became a regular in the Mets lineup. He was a versatile player who could play first base, third base, and the outfield.

Kranepool was a key member of the 1969 Mets team that won the World Series. He batted .259 with 12 home runs and 65 RBIs that season.

Kranepool continued to play for the Mets until 1979. He finished his career with a .265 batting average, 128 home runs, and 750 RBIs.

After his playing career, Kranepool coached for the Mets, Yankees, and Reds. He also managed the Mets' Class A affiliate in St. Lucie, Florida.

Kranepool was inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame in 1987. He was also a member of the New York Mets Old Timers.

Kranepool is survived by his wife, Barbara, and three children.
